What to Expect at a Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center
Seeking treatment at drug and alcohol rehabilitation center can be scary and overwhelming for patients, and they may wonder what to expect when they check in for treatment.
When it comes to treatment programs for substance abuse, there are many types of rehab centers offering support on an inpatient, outpatient, and supervised medical detox basis. You may find with research that centers offer different routes to rehabilitation as far as schedules and mission for clean and sober living. Keep in mind that most substance abuse centers have several offerings in common, such as:
1. Counselling
Counseling is a huge part of a successful substance abuse recovery. So drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers offer addicts the space to work one on one with a counselor to identify their triggers, behaviors, and patterns that contribute to their substance abuse. Councillors help patients identify what made them start using and how they can cope with their addiction and go on to live a sober lifestyle. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often used to treat patients in addiction treatment centers because it identifies and teaches coping mechanisms for behavioral responses to addiction triggers.
2. Onsite doctors
Almost all treatment programs for substance abuse have onsite doctors in case of an accidental overdose, as well as to supervise patients during detox. On site physicians may also support addiction programs monitoring patients undergoing abstinence-based programs (i.e., Alcoholics Anonymous or AA).
3. Group therapy
Group therapy gives patients valuable tools and techniques to help them maintain sobriety. Group therapy offers a safe space to talk about personal, vulnerable subject to other individuals in recovery, including personal issues, cravings, trigger avoidance, as well as to ask questions, seek advice, and learn from the experiences of others. During group meetings, a leader keeps everyone on track.
4. Specialized therapies
Many treatment centers provide specialized therapies that are focused on the unique patient needs, such as stress management, anger management, equine therapy, art therapy, and grief counseling.
5. Family therapy
Family support is also an important aspect of addiction treatment. This offers entire families the opportunity and space to identify enabling patterns, codependency, talk out anger, resentment, and mistrust and resolve issues associated with addiction.
